DAY 54 – SUNDAY 10/18/15 – NASHVILLE, TN

October 19, 2015 Road Trip 2015  No comments

We were awoken by Seth leaving for work around 10 am. Slept a little longer, waking up around 10:30 am. Jim and Pam were being a bit noisy playing Flonkerton, but we moved past it. We got up and watched The Office, while each of us got showered and ready. I think I saw Michael and Pam delivering paper for their own paper company outside Emily’s house. Probably not.

We left around 12:45. Oscar and Toby were calling a meeting for the Finer Things Club, but we couldn’t make it. We dropped Alex off to wait in line for Hattie B’s Hot Chicken, where the line was literally out the door. We parked for free around the corner, which was clutch. We waited 40 minutes to order and another 20 to get out food. Karen Filipelli was the woman who took our order. Really sweet...

DAY 53 – SATURDAY OCTOBER 10/17/15 – MEMPHIS, TN TO NASHVILLE, TN

October 17, 2015 Road Trip 2015  No comments

Up at 8 am.

Left at 8:45 am.

Stuck in traffic due to a local marathon.

Drove to Lynchburg, TN to the Jack Daniel’s distillery.

Farms, land, not much.

Gas for $1.94.

Jack Daniel’s at 1:20 pm. Very crowded, had to get last tour at 4 pm.

Walked across the bridge to Historic Lynchburg. Walked around and looked at all the shops.

Bar-b-que Caboose – Pulled pork for lunch. Decent, especially compared to recent BBQ.

Alex went shopping, I sat in a rocking chair and called my parents.

Made a friend named Kevin – a Vietnam War vet who unfortunately has 3 types of cancer. We talked baseball and traveling. He’s family friends with Bobby Richardson, former 2nd baseman for the Yankees who was on the championship teams in the late 50’s and early 60’s. A very kind soul and positive connection.

Tour at 4 pm...

DAY 52 – FRIDAY 10/16/15 – MEMPHIS, TN

10:00 am – We awoke from our peaceful slumbers. We cleaned ourselves in the pure water of Memphis’ finest establishment, our Super 8 Motel.

10:30 am – Drove in our automobile machine to historic Downtown Memphis, Tennessee. We parked our vehicle a convenient 2 blocks away from the Peabody Hotel.

11:00 am – Arrived on the later side to the morning viewing of the March of the Peabody Ducks. We viewed atop the 2nd level, views fit for kings amongst the crowded populous. We watched the ducks parade from the elevator down the red carpet to the fountain. What a sight to see!

11:30 am – Toured the Stax Museum of Soul Music in what used to be Stax Studios. Tons of history of the brief though monumentally significant music powerhouse...

10:00 am – Rise and shine!

10:30 am – Problems with Lyft app…couldn’t do ducks at Peabody 🙁  However it was going to be 90 degrees outside, so nothing wrong with a beautiful day in Memphis!

11:00 am – Arrived at Beale Street. Walked the couple blocks to see all of the restaurants, shops, and music bars. We saw a WC Handy Statue, FedEx Forum (where the Grizzlies play), and kids on a school trip.

11:30 am – Happened upon the Gibson Guitar Factory! Awesome! We got tickets for the 12 pm tour and walked across the street to the Rock n Soul Museum. Checked out the site and got a tourist map.

12:00 pm – Gibson Guitar Factory Tour. No photos unfortunately, but understandable. The tour guide, Sam, was really fun and informative. This factory produces totally custom and hand-made guitars...

DAY 50 – WEDNESDAY 10/14/15 – CHICAGO, IL TO MEMPHIS, TN

October 14, 2015 Road Trip 2015  No comments

6:30 am. Way too early to wake up on day 50 of this amazing road trip. Emily had already left for school at that point, having gone to bed when we did. What a trooper. We got up, cleaned up our filthy boy mess and left Chicago at 7:15 am, according to plan. We had to get gas pretty quickly, so after struggling through commuter / accident related traffic going into downtown Chicago and crossing over to Indiana, we got gas (AND dunkin donuts for the first time since camp in August!). The drive after went smoothly, and was filled with the all too familiar landscape of farms, corn, and wheat. Oh yeah, we changed time zone back to eastern time at some point during our drive in Indiana.

We got to Butler University right outside Indianapolis around 11:45 eastern time...

–Woke up. Emily already at school for PD.

–Showered.

–Booked hotel in Memphis.

–Moved car closer to Emily’s.

–Bubble tea @ Tank Noodle (in “Asia on Argyle” neighborhood). Very disappointing. Guy who worked there stepped outside and told us about a better place down the street. Great, that really helps.

–Didn’t take train to Wrigleyville.

–Thai Avenue for lunch around the corner. $7 lunch special – spring roll, soup, pad thai. Good looks, and good deal for price.

–Navy Pier – awesome indoor fountains and garden. Walked entire length – massive anchor @ end of pier. Not crowded, cool weather. Lots of shops inside. Annie’s Pretzels.

–Walked downtown Chicago.

–Eataly, again. Yummy snacks.

–Walked more.

–Fodo Irish pub to watch Cubs game and a quick snack (again).

–Back to Emily’...

BACKWARDS POST!

1:30 am – Got back to Emily’s apartment and went to bed.

1:15 am – Left Headquarters Beercade in what we came to find out was “Mystery Lyft.” Our driver, Chone, was known for having a mystery box in the back full of treats and prizes that changed constantly, hence the mystery. We each got 2 candy bars and a bottle of water. Such great customer service!

11:45 pm – Got to Headquarters Beercade, a bar / arcade that Cohn had taken me to when I visited in April. There are 2 locations, and it turns out I took Alex to the wrong one. Most of the games were either closed down or faulty...

DAY 47 – SUNDAY 10/11/15 – CHICAGO, IL

October 11, 2015 Road Trip 2015  No comments

8:00 am – Alex woke up and heard the Chicago marathon from outside Cohner’s apartment.

11:00 am – I woke up, fresh as a daisy. I had been feeling sick recently, so the extra sleep helped a lot. We showered and relaxed and packed our stuff up.

1:00 pm – Got to Emily Kelin’s apartment in the Andersonville neighborhood, north of where Cohner lives. Emily’s best friend from home, Julia, was also visiting. Alex and I had heard tons about Julia over the years, and vice versa, so it was great to finally all put faces to the names. Special shout out to Emily for being the only one of our friends to read all of our blog! She’s the best Team Handsome groupie in the world, and a pretty awesome person without that exclusive title too.

1:30 pm –Lunch at Hamburger Mary’s – they all g...

DAY 46 – SATURDAY 10/10/15 – SIOUX FALLS, SD TO CHICAGO, IL

October 10, 2015 Road Trip 2015  No comments

We treated ourselves to a late sleep in compared to the day before, waking up around 8 am. We showered and packed and enjoyed the complimentary continental breakfast provided by the hotel. Standard, and not that bad. We left Sioux Falls around 9:15 am and crossed into Minnesota shortly after, around 9:30 am. We drove through corn and wheat for hours. Classic Minnesota. We got has in Jackson, Minnesota and I won $3 on a $1 scratch off. This is a super lucky trip for me.

After logging some more time on the road we saw a sign for the world’s tallest Jolly Green Giant in Blue Earth, Minnesota, so of course we stopped off. It was advertised as 60 feet but in fact 55, so we were beyond disappointed. There was a sign in front of the statue that detailed its construction, history, purpose etc...
