THE BIG DAY IS FINALLY HERE! Shot up at 7:15 am when my alarm went off to get ready for the big drive. After packing some final things – because we had packed most of the car up the night before – and showering etc we left Miami around 8;15 am. Our first stop was Tampa, FL to have lunch with Sam Smith (not the Grammy-award winning singer, the girl that worked in creative arts at Wekeela in 2011). On the way to Tampa we got caught in some commuter traffic leaving Miami. We stopped to get gas at BJs, spoke to Ephram Caflun on speaker phone, and made a quick pitstop at Walgreens for caffeinated drinks, snacks, and caffeine pills.

We got to Sam’s house around 1:15 pm after driving over all 739 speed bumps between the end of the highway and Sam’s drive way...

Just a heads up – today was perhaps the laziest day we had. Don’t get yourselves too excited, fans.

Alex was up around 11:30 am. I slumbered until 12:15 pm. LET’S GO! We knew we had to stock up on sleep before the road trip because we’re planning on doing a lot, which limits sleep and rest time. When I got up I did like 83 more of those Kenken puzzles. So addicting. Shortly after I got up I received some bad news from my mom while watching all of the Apple announcements with Alex. My great uncle Lenny passed away, Scout’s health isn’t too great, and my mom needs to get a new car. Bad news comes in 3s, right? I texted my cousins to check in on everyone. We anticipated his passing, but it was sad nonetheless.

We got to Little Havana for lunch around 1:45, knowing we had to back around 3 to...

DAY 13 – MONDAY 9/7/15 – KANSAS CITY, MO

Up and at ‘em at 7:30 am. It was pouring and there was thunder and lightning. Perfect weather for a day at the water park… We had bought tickets the night before knowing the weather forecast, which said the bad weather was meant to be done around 11 am. We left at 8:15 to get breakfast at Dagwood’s café, a small breakfast place that was one of the few open on Labor Day. I got an awesome and very filling breakfast burrito, and sampled some of Cory’s massive chocolate chip pancake. We got back in the car to head Schlitterbahn in the pouring rain around 9:15.

Before getting to the park, we stopped at some nearby hotel to change and use the facilities (poop, badly). We had to go really badly, so Cory and I used the ladies room (yes, I finally actually used the ladies room)...

DAY 12 – SUNDAY 9/6/15 – KANSAS CITY, MO

We slept in until around 10 am. I gave up my spot on the mattress that night to Gill so I ended up sleeping on a large, round cushion for a big chair in the master bedroom. It wasn’t too bad, but could’ve been much worse if I had to just sleep on the hard floor. We listened to some of Cory’s vinyl records while we got ready to head to the Royals game.

We arrived early to Kauffman Stadium, around 11:30 am, in order to get Mike Sweeney bobbleheads and tour the park before the game started. In the outfield there were a ton of family friendly activities, like facepainting, batting cages, and a carousel, in additon to big time attractions like the Royals Hall of Fame and George Brett statue. Also, we were able to see the gorgeous fountains above the warning track up close...

DAY 11 – SATURDAY 9/5/15 – KANSAS CITY, MO + LAWRENCE, KS

We woke up at 8 am to check on Gill’s flight status. He called Cory to tell him he missed the 5 am flight and would be taking a flight to Philadelphia and then KC that would get him in around 6 pm. We were planning on going to Schlitterbahn water park that day but readjusted to fit the Prince’s itinerary. Now that Gill was out of our hair until the evening we went back to bed until 10:45 am because we were wiped. After we got up we all showered, gathered our belongings, met Cory’s mom real quick, and left his house

After leaving Cory’s we went to Cory’s high school, Shawnee Mission South. As the truly expert tour guide he is, he regaled us in tales of his youth and days at SMS HS. We even got out and checked out the habitat that housed the giant tortoises – super cool...

Alex and I got up at 8:15 to get ready to head to the airport. We did some last minute packing and cleaning before our Uber driver arrived at 9 am on the dot. Luiz, who we learned is from Brazil, was a really polite guy and got us to the airport at 9:45, which left us plenty of time before our 11:30 am flight. Alex and I both had checked in the night before. Somehow Alex’s TSA pre-approved status also applied to me, probably because we booked on the same reservation even though that kinda doesn’t make sense. So we sauntered through security in 5 minutes and got to the gate shortly after 10. I got a cheeky breakfast at Starbucks, we hung out and used the 30 minute free wifi, and boarded our first plane.

We were late to board the plane, finally sitting down around 11:30 am which was ou...

Another late wake up – 11:30 am. Freshened up, put on our makeup and Sunday best and hit the road to pick up Eric Rubenstein at the University of Miami. Though we got caught in some traffic we made pretty good time. We arrived around 1, parked, and Rubes met up with us. He gave us a tour of his dorm, the dining hall (Alex’s request), the book store (my request – got a Miami track shirt), and the area where some of the classrooms are. We left campus around 2 to get lunch at Casola’s. The pizza and wings there were huge! I got a slice of pepperoni and onion which was basically 2 slices, and we (over) ordered 24 jumbo wings. WAY too much, but it was really good.

After eating enough for 10 people we headed back to Miami to get Elise at her hostel...

Early wake up today – 8:30 am. We got ready and I ate a quick breakfast. Lisa Bronfman arrive a little after 9 to drop off Jordy. We chatted for a bit, she almost knocked over the Lelchuk’s new glass fish from Italy, and she was on her way. We got in Alex’s car with plenty of water for everyone for the day and went to the Four Points Hotel to pick up Elise and Chris. Everyone was in the car by 10. Off to the Everglades!

We drove down “Alligator Alley,” which was the long road with all of the various Everglades tour offerings, ultimately landing on Everglades Safari Park. IT WAS SO HOT OUT! We were sweating just standing waiting for tickets. Our $25 ticket got us a 45 minute airboat tour of the Everglades, an alligator show, and a pass to walk around their mini zoo...

I can’t believe it’s September 1st! I guess when you’re on extended vacation you lose track of time. We were up at 11 am, freshened up, and headed downtown to meet up with Lee Shapes for lunch at Padrino’s for Cuban food. By the way – on the drive down we passed by the house Eric Clapton used for 461 Ocean Boulevard. Pretty cool. Seeing Lee was awesome! We hadn’t seen him since 2003/2004 – another blast from the past – but as it is with camp people it was like we saw him yesterday. He and his girlfriend of 7 years (7 years!) live together where he’s a golf pro and she works at a hospital. Of the course the food was delicious too. I opted for the lunch buffet – 3 different types of amazing rice, pork and grilled onions, plantain chips, etc. And I had my first café cubano...
