September 30, 2015 Road Trip 2015  No comments

Today’s post theme – short, single sentences. Let’s see how this works out.

Woke up at 9:45 am.

Hung out with Chloe. She likes pancakes.

J train to downtown at 10:45 am.

Walked to New Asia dim sum in Chinatown.

SO good. Cheaper than the day before. We were the only white people.

Tuttimelon for custom bubble tea and a $1 banana nutella crepe. Also amazing.

Café Trieste for best cappuccino as recommended by Lelchuk’s dad. VERY good.

Walked through North Beach aka Little Italy in the rain.

Pier 45 – Musee Mechanique had over 200 arcade machines, some from the 1800’s. Incredible collection.

Pier 39 – sea lions! So cool! Good karma! Lots of shops, including chocolate heaven (what it sounds like).

Tried to take the trolley and use our tickets from earlier that day...

DAY 35 – TUESDAY 9/29/15 – SAN FRANCISCO, CA

September 29, 2015 Road Trip 2015  No comments

Alex was up when I wasn’t so he let me sleep in. Then I woke up and he was still sleeping, so I let him keep going. We were both up at 11:30 am. He slept on an air mattress and I got the couch. Both were super spacious and comfortable. We eventually left Martha’s to catch the J MUNI train around 12:30 pm to head to dim sum.

We crushed dim sum at Yank Sing at the end of Market Street near the waterfront from 1 – 1:30 pm. It was sold to us as the best dim sum in SF from several sources, and it lived up to its reputation. It was expensive, but we got what we paid for. We had a lot of everything, and it was awesome. After we were done we walked down to the waterfront area, where we realized we knew where we were because that area of town was a level in Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 4...

DAY 34 – MONDAY 9/28/15 – LOS ANGELES, CA TO SAN FRANCISCO, CA

September 28, 2015 Road Trip 2015  No comments

Today’s the day we finally do the Pacific Coast Highway! We’ve been talking about this drive since planning our trip over the summer. I woke up at 7:30 so we could leave around 8:15 to get dropped off at Timmy’s place in Van Nuys. After my uncle dropped me off Timmy and I left to meet Alex and his aunt Beth at Cici’s café. We waited a bit to get seated but it was worth it. I think their menu was 13 pages long, including 3 pages worth of pancakes. 3 pages of pancakes!! I ended up getting a make your own omelet (almost as good as the ones at Ms. Shirley’s in Baltimore) while Alex got skydiver pancakes (banana chocolate chip buttermilk pancakes with peanut butter – SOOOO good). His aunt Beth is really cool and it was great to have met 2nd of his mom’s sisters...

DAY 33 – SUNDAY 9/27/15 – LOS ANGELES, CA

Today was a relaxing day. We got up at 9:30 or so. After getting ready Alex left around 10 to head to his aunt Beth and uncle Bill for the day. This was our first full day apart on the road trip. How would we manage?!? After Alex left Timmy drove me to Vida Café in Culver City and dropped me off so I could get brunch with Ricardo Horna, the Spanish teaching guru from my TFA Baltimore days. We met up around 11, and it was so great to see him! We hung out for a bit at a St. Patrick Day party in Baltimore when he visited and I was still there. I had an incredible berry smoothie and variation of a breakfast burrito. Great call, Ricardo. By the way Ricardo is going to be famous one day after he graduates from USC. Just putting that out there...

DAY 32 – SATURDAY 9/26/15 – LOS ANGELES, CA

September 26, 2015 Road Trip 2015  No comments

We slept in until around 10 am today. We got ready and left around 10:45 am to meet up with Bryant Fox at the Black Cat in Silver Lake for brunch. Seeing B-Fox was great, as always. He managed to fit us in between his busy work and gigging schedule, and I was concerned that we wouldn’t have been able to see him. We had a blast with B Butters, messing around with the waitress (who Bryant is in love with – sorry bro) and cracking jokes like bros do. The Butter Man had work around 12:30, so after finishing up our delicious breakfasts we made moves elsewhere.

We planned to host a BBQ at Timmy’s later that day, so we ran some errands around town. We picked up food, drinks, the board game Wit and Wagers, and a few other necessities over a few different pitstops...

DAY 30 – THURSDAY 9/24/15 – KINGMAN, AZ TO LOS ANGELES, CA

September 24, 2015 Road Trip 2015  No comments

Sleep, glorious sleep! We slept in until 10 am to compensate for our early mornings while camping the past week. After freshening up packing we loaded the car and hit the road at 11 am to make our way to LA for the weekend. We took I-40, which is parallel to Route 66, the majority of the way before merging onto more Californian roads. We were in California by 11:40 am and passed through an inspection station shortly after to make our way to Hollywood.

We needed to stop for gas, and because we were in the middle of the Mojave Dessert there weren’t a lot of options. We looked up gas in the area and found Najah’s Desert Oasis in Essex, California. The station was pretty cool – it had flamingoes, a fountain, a little restaurant…BUT GAS WAS $4...

DAY 29 – WEDNESDAY 9/23/15 – JACOB LAKE, AZ TO KINGMAN, AZ

September 23, 2015 Road Trip 2015  No comments

Today was the first day of fall. We didn’t feel it because of where we were but it’s a sad realization that summer is over, even though we’re on extended fun-employment vacation. We left at 8 am to drive an hour or so to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. The plan was to do both the north and south rims in the same day, which are 3 hours apart, so we knew we couldn’t do everything in both parts, just the best of each.

We got to the North Rim visitor’s center around 9 am. A park ranger gave an informative overview of the park’s main features and advice for trips of different lengths. We hiked to Bright Angel Point, which was one of the only hikes accessible from the area near the visitor’s center...

DAY 28 – TUESDAY 9/22/15 – BRYCE CANYON, UT TO JACOB LAKE, AZ

September 22, 2015 Road Trip 2015  No comments

7:45 am à Woke up in 45 degree weather (cold). Showered at the campground in really nice water (pressure and temperature). Left around 9 am.

9:10 am – 12:00 pm à Bryce Canyon National Park – It was cool and cloudy so not the best weather for a NP but it didn’t rain so that was good. And it wasn’t super croweded either so that helped out. We drove the entire 18-mile length of the park and worked our way back to stop off at certain viewpoints and hikes. We saw Rainbow Point, Natural Bridge, Thor’s Hammer, Sunset Point, and more. Once again, check the pics to see how beautiful this place was.

[huge_it_gallery id=”36″]

12:00 pm à Left for Zion National Park

1:15 pm à Stopped at Zion Trading Post right outside the park for a $2 slice of pizza.

1:30 pm – 5 pm à Zion National P...

DAY 27 – MONDAY 9/21/15 – MOAB, UT TO BRYCE CANYON, UT

September 21, 2015 Road Trip 2015  No comments

7:45 am à Woke up, packed up the tent like absolute champions

8:15 am àLeft the camp grounds

9 am – 12 pm à Arches National Park – no amount of writing can explain how unique and incredible and beautiful these national parks are. We did a lot of hiking (relative for us) to see a lot of major points in the park. We saw Balanced Rock, The Windows, Delicate Arch (which is on Utah license plates), and Wolfe Ranch, among many others. The natural features that formed over time were so cool. Hopefully the pictures (Alex, cough cough) paint a better picture.

12:30 pm à Wendy’s for lunch – yum!

1:00 pm à Drove to Canyonlands (super close to Moab)

1:30 pm – 3:00 pm à Canyonlands National Park – we didn’t spend a ton of time at this park...
